Animethon 2023
It has been 4 years since I last visited Canada. Covid things made me decide to stick it out in Japan during all of that until now. From reverse culture shock to enjoying Canadian-style Japanese food once again, it has been a wonderful time seeing so many people showing off their passion for their favourite anime characters.
I had a blast taking pictures of these cosplayers and doing some touch-ups, and have learned alot in the process. I look forward to doing this again next year in 2024.

On Generative AI
The above photos would not have been possible without extensive use of Generative AI to clean up spots, remove unwanted objects, and to even create whole backdrops. The technology has been both a boon and a danger to creators everywhere, especially when it comes to cannibalizing the work of past artists and image creators. Like any new technology, care needs to be taken to preserve the human element.
Will AI eventually get to generating clothing? If we can "generate" cosplay photos, then will people ever need to cosplay anymore? Will there no longer be a need for photography, when anyone and everyone can just tell AI to generate a scene, a pose, and then add your own face? For some people, this is indeed a form of liberation they may be seeking. And yet, for others, this is so far removed from our current ideas of "naturalness" that it no longer feels organic.
